Induced labour can be more painful than a labour that begins of its own accord, because the body receives a relatively swift dose of hormones rather than a gradual increase naturally. However it's important to remember that any such medication is also optional. Sweeps are one option before the midwife discusses inducing your labour through hormonal medication such as pitocin or prostaglandin. If you're not a first-time mum, you'll be offered a sweep at 41 weeks. If you're a first-time mum you may discuss a sweep at your 38-week, 40-week, and 41-week antenatal appointment.
